Dear President Bernstein, Members of the Board of Trustees, University staff, County Executive Dan Benson, and representatives from Ewing and Hopewell,

We are writing to express our strong opposition to The College of New Jersey's plans to sell nearly 100 acres of wooded land along Bull Run Road in Hopewell Township for commercial development.

It is deeply disappointing that a public institution entrusted with educating the next generation is pursuing a deal that could destroy forests, wetlands, and wildlife habitat while placing additional burdens on neighboring residents. On October 27, the Ewing Township Council formally adopted a resolution opposing the proposed development, citing serious concerns about flooding, traffic, groundwater, wildlife, and the Shabakunk Creek Watershed. The resolution also identifies the lack of sewer infrastructure and the potential strain on Ewing's already limited wastewater capacity.

These concerns cannot simply be brushed aside. The proposed development of approximately 352 age-restricted housing units and an assisted living facility would fundamentally transform this property and could leave surrounding residents dealing with the environmental and infrastructure consequences for decades.

TCNJ's Board of Trustees authorized the pursuit of this sale for $3 million. We find it appalling that an institution of higher education would consider sacrificing nearly 100 acres of environmentally sensitive land for a small short-term financial benefit.

TCNJ should be setting an example of environmental stewardship, not treating valuable natural resources as disposable real estate. We are calling on TCNJ to immediately halt its efforts to sell this property to American Properties, publicly disclose the status and terms of any negotiations, and work with Mercer County, Ewing Township, Hopewell Township, and the State of New Jersey to explore permanent preservation.

Nearly 100 acres of forest and wetlands cannot simply be replaced once destroyed. TCNJ still has an opportunity to do the right thing. It should take it.
